What is a hook?
The hook is the first one to three seconds of a short video: the sentence or on-screen text that makes someone stop scrolling. Viewers decide almost instantly whether to keep watching, so a strong video with a weak opening often loses to an average video with a great one.
A good hook is specific. “This changed my mornings” could be about anything; “I quit coffee for 30 days and switched to this” makes a promise the rest of the video has to keep.
The 10 hook types and when to use them
Each result is labelled with its type, so you can test different angles rather than ten versions of the same one.
- Question: names a problem the viewer already has
- Bold claim: a strong, specific promise you can back up
- POV: puts the viewer in a situation (“POV: you finally found…”)
- Mistake: “Stop doing X if you want Y”
- Curiosity gap: hints at an answer the video reveals
- Number: a list or a specific figure
- Story: starts in the middle of a moment
- Contrarian: goes against what everyone says
- Before/after: shows the change upfront
- Call-out: speaks to one exact audience
Spoken hook or on-screen text?
Use both. Many people watch with the sound off, so the opening words should also appear as text in the first frame. The spoken line can be a little longer; the on-screen version should fit in two short lines.
How to test hooks
Keep the rest of the video identical and change only the first three seconds. Post the variants, or run them as separate ads, and compare how many viewers are still watching after three seconds. The best hook for one product is rarely the best for another, which is why testing beats guessing.
With Belova you can render each hook as its own UGC video with the same AI actor, so testing a new opening doesn't mean booking a creator again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no account, no card and no watermark. Each visitor can run 25 generations a day across all Belova tools, which keeps the tools fast and free for everyone.
How long should a hook be?
Under 15 words for the spoken line, and two short lines for on-screen text. The generator keeps every hook under 15 words.
Do these work for ads too?
Yes. The first seconds of a video ad work the same way as an organic video, and testing several hooks on the same ad is one of the cheapest ways to improve results.
Can I use the results for my business?
Yes. Everything the tool writes is yours to edit and publish, including in paid ads. Read it before posting, as you would any copy: check prices, claims and product details match your offer.
How is this different from asking ChatGPT?
The prompts behind each tool encode a specific format (caption structure, hook types, timed UGC scenes, ad character limits) and the output is checked before you see it. Google headlines over 30 characters, for example, are thrown away rather than shown to you.
